Islam has a principles with regards to all aspects of life for mankind. These include the concept of tolerance and engagements with followers of other religions. Allah s.w.t. created mankind on this world with different races, religions and ethnic backgrounds. For that, Allah s.w.t. taught the concept of tolerance in order to maintain peace among the people on this world. Allah s.w.t. had said in Surah Al-An’aam verse 108:

Meaning:And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.

Based on the verse above, it is clear that the difference in religion is not a hindrance in developing relationship and establishing peace among people. Even though we interact with people of different belief and faith, peace and harmony in life must always be made a priority. Allah s.w.t. allows His ummah to work with and be kind towards the followers of other religions.

Allah s.w.t. teaches us to respect and protect the rights of others. The most important lesson is that we must be fair to everyone. On this basis, Islam rejects the attitude that differentiates treatments to people based on their race, colour of their skin, nationality and so forth.

Islam stipulates that to determine the level of treatment to a person based on the mentioned criteria is a manifestation of jahiliyya or ignorance that will lead us astray.

We need to remember that even though mankind has lived on this world from the earliest of time and will do so until the end, we actually originate from one root. Therefore, as part of mankind, we are all related. We are expected to get to know each
other and eliminate the differences. Allah s.w.t. had said in Surah al-Hujurat verse 13:

Meaning:O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

Clear examples of respecting others from different religions can be seen in al-Sirah al-Nabawiyah. Take note in the Medina Charter that is renowned in the history of Islam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked all Muslims to always maintain harmony with each other. It symbolises the fairness of Islam to all mankind.
Among the details of the agreement contained in the Medina Charter is that anyone who lives and stays in Medina, Muslims or non-Muslims, with the condition that they do no wrong, must be protected and given security under the authority of Islam. A hadith narrated by Abu-Dawud bears the following meaning

Beware, if anyone wrongs a contracting man, or diminishes his right, or forces him to work beyond his capacity, or takes from him anything without his consent, I shall plead for him on the Day of Judgment. (Sunan Abu-Dawud)

Muslims should understand this demand for justice and tolerance. Nevertheless, the tolerance mentioned does not mean that we recognise their religious doctrine because in matters of faith, Islam does not compromise any comparison to Allah s.w.t. at all.

The tolerance meant by Islam is in the daily transactions or muammalah together with good attitude practised when communicating with those of different religions. It is a da’wah by example, which will bring positive impact to the spread of Islam.

Through our good behaviour and tolerance, insyaAllah with His permission, the non-Muslim community will be attracted to know more of Islam. Hopefully by reflecting and analysing again the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we will be able to conduct our da’wah to the non-Muslims with the right attitude and tolerance as defined by our religion. Hopefully too by then, we are able to interpret Islam as a religion that is “Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin” or a blessing for the whole world and its content.

Let us take this opportunity to strengthen our silaturrahim and increase our da’wah to the non-Muslims through cooperation in the academic field and certain expertise that they possess. By practising the attitudes that were discussed, we will be able to eliminate their misconceptions of Islam that were nurtured by the western propaganda against Islam. Let us end today’s khutbah by reflecting on what Allah said in Surah al-Imran verse 64:

Meaning: Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah ." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]...”
